Strengthening WASH Infrastructure & Awareness in Schools
SUMMARY
Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities is a fundamental right and a prerequisite for a safe and healthy school environment. However, many government and low-income private schools in India still lack basic infrastructure—especially gender-segregated toilets, handwashing stations, and menstrual waste disposal units. This severely affects children’s health, dignity, and school attendance—particularly for adolescent girls.
Ladli Foundation’s initiative aims to build inclusive, sustainable WASH infrastructure in schools while fostering hygiene awareness and behavioral change among students, teachers, and communities.
CHALLENGES
Inadequate Sanitation Infrastructure : Many schools lack functional, safe, and separate toilets for girls and boys.
Unhygienic Conditions : Poorly maintained washrooms, lack of water supply, and absence of menstrual waste disposal systems create an unsafe environment for students.
Lack of Hygiene Awareness : Children often grow up without handwashing habits or knowledge about personal hygiene and water-borne diseases.
High Dropout Among Adolescent Girls : Girls tend to skip school or drop out entirely due to poor toilet facilities, especially during menstruation.
Limited Community Ownership : WASH facilities often deteriorate due to lack of maintenance and accountability.
